Sanjib Mondal was born on December 20, 1975, in Fulbari, a suburb of Kolkata. He spent his early childhood there before moving to Oxford Mission, Behala, at the age of eight to begin his schooling. At ten, he began learning the violin under the guidance of Ananta Makhal and Father Mathieson, soon becoming a member of the Oxford Mission Orchestra, in 1994, Sanjib moved to London to study music under the renowned violinist Emmanuel Hurwitz.
He earned a diploma in violin from Trinity College of Music, London. He later received a scholarship to attend the Dartington International Summer School in the UK, where he studied chamber music and received advanced training in both violin and viola.
Upon returning to India in 1996. Sanjib began teaching music at the Oxford Mission. Since then, he has collaborated with numerous orchestras, musicians, and conductors across the globe. His orchestral experience includes performances as a guest violinist with the Sydney International Fellowship Orchestra (Australia), Dartington International Orchestra (UK), and McLean Symphony Orchestra (USA). He was also a member of the India-Sri Lanka Goodwill Orchestra, which performed at Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall in 2015 and 2016. Additionally, he worked with the Fukushima Youth Sinfonietta as both a violinist and conductor, performing in Fukushima, Tokyo, and Boston (USA).
In India, Sanjib has performed extensively, especially in Delhi and Bangalore, and has played with prominent ensembles such as the Bombay Symphony Orchestra and the Symphony Orchestra of India.
He received his training in conducting from several distinguished mentors, including Richard Gill, conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
Sanjib has served as a faculty member at the Calcutta School of Music and was the resident conductor of the Calcutta Chamber Orchestra from 2005 to 2016. He founded the Kolkata Youth Orchestra in 2011 and revived the Kolkata Symphony Orchestra in 2018.
Currently, Sanjib Mondal is the Head of Music at the Oxford Mission, a music teacher at St. James School, Behala, and the Founder-Director of Roger Music School. In addition, he serves as the Head of Western Music at the Bishop Canning Music Academy and the Conductor of the Bishop Canning Academy Orchestra (BCAO).
COURSES OFFERED
VOCALS
Junior Music Class: Students are eligible to join at the age of 4 years. It is a foundation Course in music. Basic elements like rhythm and melody are taught through singing and games. Children sing and perform on elementary percussion instruments. It is a class where the teacher helps to develop the children's basic musical ability and then guides them in the choice of the correct Stream of music at the age of 6 years. Participation in School Concerts is encouraged.
Senior and Junior Choir : Children are taken in from the age of six. Along with voice training. children learn to harmonize and sing. They are encouraged to participate in concerts at the Academy and also at other prestigious events.
Western Vocals : Classes begin with vocal exercises that teach the students to produce the correct sound and Voice Control. Both traditional and popular songs, are taught. Students are encouraged to perform at concerts. The training provides an opportunity to learn to sing together as a Choir and enjoy it.
INSTRUMENTALS
All students who seek enrolment need to have the relevant instrument at home to meet the demands of practice that will be needed. A graded course is followed. Assessments are offered for Practical and Theory grades and Diploma under the UK Boards. Students are encouraged to perform at the formal and informal concerts held by the Academy on a regular basis. Theory inputs are provided along with the practical classes, for holistic learning.
Piano: Students are allowed to join from the age of five years.
Violin : Students are allowed to join at the age of five years.
Guitar- Classical: The classical guitar is a solo instrument and is played with a set of nylon strings. Students can adapt themselves to any style of guitar playing after gaining experience and a thorough knowledge of the technique. Students are allowed to join from the age of 5 years.
Guitar-Non-Classical: A comprehensive course is taught which covers both contemporary style and techniques. The course includes both Solo and Accompaniment style from basic to advance levels. Bass Guitar is also taught. Students are allowed to join from the age of five years.
Recorder: An introduction to the Classical wind instrument is provided at an early age of five. Students play in groups.
Drum-kit: Starting from the age of six, drums are taught by staff notation and modern rhythms. Patterns are explained and taught through staff notation.
Saxophone : The Saxophone is the most essential musical instrument in a western band. One can learn Saxophone from the age of eight years. It is also taught through staff notation.
Electronic Keyboard : Classical and non-classical pieces are taught with the help of notations in a methodical way. Students are allowed to join from the age of five years.
ASSESMENT
Eligible students are encouraged to appear in Music exams conducted by one following Interactional Boards.
A) Royal Schools of Music
B) Trinity College London.

Bishop Canning Academy Orchestra
Conductor: Sanjib Mondal
The Bishop Canning Music Academy will run and support the Orchestra (BCAO) which will be made up of a full-fledged string orchestra. The academy will pay each musician a stipend for each practice session and an honorarium for the concert performances and will try to organize trainers from overseas to improve the skills of the musicians and The Academy will look after all their needs.
The aim of Bishop Canning Academy Orchestra will be to perform in different parts of Kolkata as well as outside the city. The orchestra will also reach out to different schools, colleges, churches and share the joy of music.
